Arrived at your dream destination and realised you’ve forgotten to buy travel insurance during all the excitement of holiday planning? Or your travel insurance has expired because you’ve decided to extend your trip, and now you’re wondering if you can get travel insurance after you’ve already left. With nib, you can.

Why choose nib for your next overseas trip?

If you’re already travelling and haven’t hit any speed bumps yet, you might be wondering…why bother with travel insurance? The answer’s simple: unexpected situations can happen at any time. It could be something minor—like delayed luggage, or something major—like a natural disaster.

Purchasing travel insurance may turn out to be the last-minute decision that may keep you safe, healthy, and may save your back pocket.

Australian residents can choose between three travel insurance plans: Comprehensive, Essentials, and Annual Multi Trip. Each plan offers benefits* (up to policy limits), including:

  • Overseas Medical Expenses
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Luggage and personal effects
  • Rental vehicle insurance excess
  • Travel delay
  • Personal liability

Can you buy travel insurance while abroad?

If you’re an Australian who has already started travelling overseas and just realised that buying travel insurance is a smart move, nib may have you covered.

Keep in mind, though, that waiting periods do apply:

  • If you were already travelling when you bought your nib travel insurance, and the policy start date is within 72 hours of the issue of your certificate of insurance, you'll need to wait 72 hours for cover for most benefits to begin.
  • However, if you suffer an injury due to an accident after your trip departure date (as noted on your Certificate of Insurance) but before the 72-hour waiting period ends, cover for Medical expenses and Medical evacuation and repatriation begins immediately for that injury.
  • If you buy a policy while overseas and your policy start date is 72 hours or more after the issue date of your Certificate of Insurance, coverage for cancellation or trip interruption expenses will begin 72 hours after we issue the policy. All other benefits will start on your departure date.

FAQs about buying travel insurance abroad

Can I extend my policy if I am still travelling overseas?

If you’ve decided to extend your stay and still hold a current nib travel insurance policy, haven’t made a claim, and there have been no significant changes to your circumstances (e.g. health) since purchasing your original policy, you may be able to extend your travel insurance (up to a maximum of 12 months from your original departure date as shown on your Certificate of Insurance).

However, if your policy has expired, you may need to buy a new one. If you are unsure, contact us at any time.

Why is there a waiting period?
A waiting period helps prevent travellers from buying insurance only after something has gone wrong—this keeps the cost lower for everyone.

Can I cancel my travel insurance policy if I change my mind?
Yes, nib offers a cooling-off period of 21 days from the purchase date of your policy. If you haven't started your trip, made a claim, or intend to make a claim, you can cancel your policy for a full refund within this period.
